Kids In Mind - Movie Ratings that Actually Work

July 20, 2008 by Jeff White

Having four daughters 13 and younger, this is a site I refer to on a regular basis. While not specifically a Christian website, Kids in Mind provides the most detailed movie reviews you’ll find anywhere. But these aren’t your typical “two thumbs up” style of movie reviews.

Each movie is rated on a scale of 0 (none) to 10 (extreme) in three categories, sexual content, violence, and language. A movie with a score of 0.0.0 is as kid friendly as they come, but they’re almost non-existent. The recent Disney movie WALL-E scored a 1.2.1.

You also get a break down of each category with descriptions of the content that affect the rating. For example, this weekend’s blockbuster, The Dark Knight, received a 2.7.3, which means the violence and gore aspect of the movie would be of the biggest concern with a rating of 7. The review goes on to mention key scenes of violence with descriptions like this one:

A man complains of stomach pain, we see a large scar on his abdomen, something inside his stomach blinks and he and several other men in the room explode (we see the flash and rubble). A man drinks what he thinks is alcohol, but it is acid and we see him thrashing on the floor and we see acid burning a computer keyboard on his desk.

After reading a movie review on Kids in Mind, you’ll be informed in deciding if a movie is right for your family. This is a great resource that I’m sure you’ll use over and over.
